“Oh Europe” – an appropriate motto for a chamber music concert with Ewa Kupiec. The Polish pianist is devoted entirely to her fellow countryman, Chopin, whose 200th birthday she will celebrate not with pomp and orchestra, but rather intimately and personally accompanied by a quartet. She will receive support from her Czech neighbors, the Pražák Quartet, which has enjoyed an internationally successful career for over 30 years. For many years now, Ewa Kupiec has also been making a name for herself far beyond the borders of her home country as a great pianist. Witold Lutosławski once described her as “a true revelation”. Chopin’s Piano Concertos No. 1 and No. 2 are among the few orchestral works that he composed. In chamber music form, their impact is condensed. They represent a brilliant style à la Johann Nepomuk Hummel and sometimes exhibit a closeness to the early Mozart model. Schumann recognized the particularity in both works. Once he even said that a genius today with Mozart’s format would more likely compose the concerts of Chopin than the concerts of Mozart. Even the critics of the time were sympathetic to Chopin’s piano concertos. In 1832 the Revue Musicale wrote about his concert debut in Paris: “There is soul in his melodies, fantasy in his passages, and originality in everything.”
