Lied Academy

For many years, the Heidelberg Lied Academy has been a very special location for all those eager to engage with the art song from a wider perspective. Under Thomas Hampson’s leadership, outstanding teachers, singers, pianists, theatre directors and Lied experts come and go, open classes vouchsafe fascinating glimpses of the Lied cosmos and reveal the quality of the young singers from all over the world fortunate enough to take part.

In the 2020/21 season, in addition to the masterclasses during Heidelberger Frühling, a closed work phase in November 2020 in Heidelberg as well as workshops as part of the Schubert Week at Pierre Boulez Saal Berlin  are part of the Lied Academy.

Open Classes

In these public master classes, Thomas Hampson, Brigitte Fassbaender and Malcolm Martineau work with the grant recipients in the presence of an audience. The open classes make it possible to listen to performances as they evolve and to achieve a finer appreciation of individual song interpretation.

Fellow Konzerte

For the first time, four alumni of the Lied Academy have been invited to propose short recitals of their own. All of them are closely connected with the festival and have worked together frequently in previous years.

Lied Talk

In extempore half-hourly sittings consisting of an interview and a moderated exchange, Brigitte Fassbaender, Thorsten Schmidt and Malcom Martineau will be joining Thomas Hampson to celebrate the thematic diversity of the lied.
