The equal level of expression of piano and singing are often touted in the song genre, and duo partners who appear as a perfect unit are considered ideal. The baritone Christian Gerhaher and pianist Gerold Huber have been making music as a lied duo since their student days and have lived this unity of song and piano almost every day for the past 30 years. Both of them are particularly fond of the songs by Robert Schumann - a complete recording of all Schumann songs will be published this year. And so the internationally renowned duo Christian Gerhaher & Gerold Huber also brings Schumann songs to our stage, combined with two song cycles by Claude Debussy. The two composers are united by their approach to the song, which is expressed above all in a great abstraction and associative openness. Debussy also dealt with Schumann's songwriting by arranging settings by Schumann: His focus was less on fundamental interventions in the material, but rather on making the lines and polyphonic elements audible. In this way, the songs by Schumann and Debussy, composed in the 19th and 20th centuries, are perhaps more modern than they initially seem.

In cooperation with the Internationale Liedzentrum and  Sony Classical, Christian Gerhaher records all of Schumann's songs - 299 in total - and is accompanied by Gerold Huber. An 11-part CD box is being created under the title »Alle Lieder« and will be released by the label in autumn 2021. Find out more about the CD-project...
