Pergolesi: Stabat Mater

This cry for help softens the hardest heart. In Pergolesi's »Stabat Mater«, two bright voices ask for Mary's succor, her maternal consolation, which she gave to Jesus on the cross. Pergolesi found tender music for the medieval poem in 1736 and dressed it in understated operatic style. Baroque pomp? Passé! The Italian enchanted his audience with the new elegance - the magic lasts until today.
