Eivind Buene, born in 1973, the inspired composer, improviser and writer from Norway, understands Schubert's songs as a starting point for free and very personal actualizations. In his first novel, »One-Man Orchestra«, one of the protagonists, a history student, went through a psychological crisis with »Winterreise«. Literary associations triggered musical ones at the time: »While writing, I began to experiment a bit with the songs myself. I tried to imagine what it would sound like if Schubert were a singer-songwriter in the seventies.« Translated into English, with his raspy voice set to stripped-down Fender Rhodes accompaniment, Buene made the art song classics sound surprisingly current and relevant to everyday life. Premiering in 2019, »Schubert Lounge« now takes the concept a step further. Starting with selected originals, Buene has written an ensemble work that mirrors the surviving musical texts and his own pop music approach. Two outstanding Norwegian vocalists - here the experimental mezzo-soprano, there the classical baritone - as well as the Oslo Sinfonietta present ever surprising conundrums of styles, sounds and sensibilities.
