Heidelberg, the city of song, and the Heidelberger Frühling music festival can already justly claim to be a symbiotic twosome. With the establishment of the International Song Centre they have set their sights on the future. The Centre is designed to be a cynosure and a meeting point for international initiatives, a powerhouse, a platform, a moving force and an inspiration. In short, a workshop embracing all the centuries in which songs have been created.
The Centre will coordinate, intensify and internationalise all the activities connected with song that have always been an intrinsic feature of Baden-Württemberg’s biggest music festival. Existing festival projects like the experimental series »Lied.Lab«, scenic song productions, and the festival within a festival called »Neuland.Lied« will be joined in 2017 by the International Song Competition »Das Lied« hitherto located in Berlin. Alongside the Lied Academy it will be one of the permanent sectors of the Song Centre. Also planned is the establishment of a »Song Network«, a platform for national and international partners dedicated to the joint masterminding of projects and the assurance of their international visibility, all in the service of new impulses galvanising an ongoing discourse on the future of song as an art form.
