Accademia del Piacere. Fahmi Alqhai

Nowhere in the history of music have Orient and Occident, improvisation and "sound speech", folklore and early music come so close together as in the Arabo-Andalusian tradition of the 15th and 16th centuries. Fahmi Alqhai, one of the best gambists and interpreters of early music, comes from Seville, but began his musical training in Syria. His Accademia del Piacere features two excellent violas da gamba, setar and flamenco guitar, among other instruments, while the vocal parts are sung by Tunisian Ghalia Benali and Spanish Quiteria Muñoz. The perfectly attuned octet manages to bridge the gap between East and West without any pretense - an Andalusian dream full of temperament and finesse.
