Amiri Harewood

A mirror is held up to the piano here: Sergei Rachmaninov reflected on the Baroque era in his virtuoso variations on a theme by Arcangelo Corelli, a contemporary of piano great Johann Sebastian Bach. And the Turkish star pianist Fazıl Say took Gershwin's bluesy evergreen "Summertime" as the starting point for good-humored improvisations. Amiri Harewood, who took the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Konzerthaus and London's Wigmore Hall by storm last season, is somewhat reminiscent of Say's shrewd, expressive playing style. With heart and brain, he has put together this original programme that shows him not only as an excellent pianist, but also as an alert and inspiring artist.
