In this concert, Belgian clarinetist Annelien Van Wauwe and her French piano partner Paloma Kouider evoke the Parisian Belle Époche of the late 19th and early 20th century – and thus a "golden" era radiating splendor, elegance, optimism and peacefulness. Their two instruments mingle in graceful pieces by Gabriel Pierné, Claude Debussy and Charles-Marie Widor. Interspersed are solo numbers by Cécile Chaminade and the Finnish contemporary Kaija Saariaho, who broadens the horizon with "Duft", as does Francis Poulenc with his late clarinet sonata. A program worth exploring!

Francis Poulenc dedicated his Clarinet Sonata to composer friend Arthur Honegger, who died in 1955. Sad, yes, but above all this work sounds perky and urban. "Sometimes it stinks a little bit," says Annelien van Wauwe. Like podcast host Thilo Braun, the clarinetist immediately has the city of Paris on her mind.
