Concert with Quatuor Diotima at 4 pm
"The string clef illustrates actions on the four string parts behind the bridge,... Apart from the 'normal' bow pressure ... the flautato playing and the pressed bow stroke play an important role... The playing instructions battuto, saltando and balzando must be carefully observed in their diversity." Even this small excerpt from the four closely printed columns with "Explanations on notation and performance practice" for Helmut Lachenmann's first quartet "Gran Torso" makes it clear that it is not at all easy to bring this composer's unique notation to the string instruments. The workshop with the Fabrik Quartet and Lucas Fels gives the audience a rare insight into Lachenmann's musical text and his playing technique instructions. What else is meant by his comment "Tones 'taken from the air', 'air' taken from the tones" to his "Reigen seliger Geister" can be experienced at the performance by Quatuor Diotima.
