Liedakademie Concert I: Heartless

The nine young singers and three pianists of the Liedakademie present the results of their work. Under the guidance of Thomas Hampson, Susan Manoff, Elitsa Desseva, and Daniel Arkadij Gerzenberg, they have developed two varied programmes that focus on the vicissitudes of love. Jörg Widmann’s song cycle “Das heiße Herz” and its collection of texts serve as the poetic starting point for experiences—sometimes hopeful, sometimes disillusioning—of the longing for a fulfilling relationship. The most important guideline: The selected songs should reflect the performers’ backgrounds and cultural socialization. The moderated performances take on a particularly personal character through the inclusion of folk and children’s songs, poems, letters, and other texts.

In addition to the Liedakademie concerts, this year’s cohort of Liedakademie scholarship recipients—comprising 12 young singers and pianists—will perform for the festival audience on multiple occasions.
