Iveta Apkalna
Light of the Baltic

The Latvian organist Iveta Apkalna is a passionate ambassador for her majestic instrument. As the titular organist of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg, she provides a strong impetus in this country and as Latvia's cultural ambassador, who has received the highest state awards, she is passionately committed to the music of her home country and the Baltic region in general. In her Heidelberg concert, she will present music by her compatriot Pēteris Vasks and Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, two composers who are particularly known for their clarity of sound expression. Apkalna will group their mystical-archaic soundscapes around the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, Johann Sebastian Bach's best-known organ work due to its effective opening.
