“You have to play from your soul and not like a trained bird.” Jermaine Sprosse, the Berlin-born specialist for historical keyboard instruments who teaches in Lyon, has internalized Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's guiding principle. His recording of works by Bach's third composer son, Johann Christoph Friedrich, the so-called “Bückeburger” Bach, released in 2023, is one of the most expressive and simply captivating recent contributions to this genre. Here he juxtaposes the great Johann Sebastian with two of his sons and his grandson Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst, who only died in 1845. Sprosse, who plays on a fortepiano after Anton Walter and who likes to present his recitals charmingly, follows late baroque practice when he adds an improvisation of his own in proper style to the honorable line of ancestors.
