For him, interpretation and invention go hand in hand: Markus Becker’s entertaining recitals blend spontaneous preludes, guided associations, and meticulously composed pieces with a delight in witty quotations. Since early childhood, the pianist from Hanover has always cultivated jazz improvisation alongside the traditional repertoire. The 2019 album “Freistil” brought together poetic distillations of immediately captivating beauty. As casual as they are stylistically assured in tone, they defied all clichés of piano jazz. “Re: Beethoven” is the title of Becker’s current programme, which will feature highlights such as the “Appassionata” as well as the late Bagatelles and selected songs. In addition, works by other composers will be heard in Heidelberg: perhaps Joseph Haydn and Robert Schumann—but of course Max Reger, born 150 years ago, whose piano works Becker knows better than anyone else...
