Frederic Rzewskis „The People United Will Never Be Defeated!“

The American composer Frederic Rzewski (1938-2021) created one of the most important works of modern piano literature with his variation piece The People United Will Never Be Defeated! With a playing time of almost an hour and a kaleidoscopic, sparkling pluralism of styles, this composition challenges performers and audiences alike. The work was composed in 1975 in view of the upcoming 200th anniversary of the founding of the United States. However, Rzewski did not provide conventional festive music for this occasion, but a politically charged composition critical of the system, based on a Chilean protest song.

Two music enthusiasts immerse themselves in the works with the audience in a deep and at the same time lively way: Marcus Imbsweiler publishes novels, including stories about composers. Timo Jouko Herrmann is a composer, violinist and guest conductor of the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra.

Pianist Igor Levit will play the work on March 28, 2026 at the Musikfestival as part of USA Day, which takes a reflective look at the United States. To the concert
