Public Rehearsal

Nicolas Altstaedt is not only one of the most fascinating cellists of our time, he is also a passionate collaborative artist. He is constantly searching for connections between voices and temperaments, bringing together musical traditions and works from all eras. Now the Heidelberg-born musician is working with the immensely talented young colleagues from the Festivalcampus: Together they are building a sonic cabinet of curiosities in which the archaic foundations of musical art - dance and cult - create sophisticated mirror effects. Stylized folklore meets concertante virtuosity, Giacinto Scelsi's rough sound explorations prepare the terrain for the brilliant Schubert reminiscences of Olli Mustonen's second nonet.
In the public rehearsal, the audience is given the rare opportunity to witness the artistic creation process directly and to experience Altstaedt's inspiring dialog and creative exchange with the imaginative young musicians. The results of this intensive collaboration can be heard in the evening concert the following day, when Altstaedt and the musicians from the Festivalcampus perform together with exceptional pianist Igor Levit. On concert days, Nicolas Altstaedt opts for a digital detox: no screens or news, just good literature and sunlight. The cellist knows that this is the only way he can perform at his best in the evening. In this podcast episode, he talks about the special tingling sensation before premieres - and why it brings people together.
