A conspicuous number of outstanding string quartets today come from France. One reason for this is certainly the far-sighted funding policy on the other side of the Rhine. The four young men of the Quatuor Van Kuijk, who joined forces at the Paris Conservatoire in 2012, were trained by the Quatuor Ysaÿe and subsequently supported by the “Pro Quartet” organization. Successes at major competitions paved the way for an international career. The French musicians' agile and detailed Mozart interpretations are universally admired. For the album “Impressions parisiennes”, the quartet recently asked jazz pianist Baptiste Trotignon to take a creative look at five French composers of the fin de siècle. The result is both attractive and original stylistic exercises between now and the past.
