Once again this year, the Festivalcampus-Ensemble is coming together for a central project to develop a programme in collaboration with a prominent figure who serves as a source of inspiration. This time, it is Dmitry Smirnov—a violinist born in St. Petersburg in 1994 who has been living in Basel for several years—who joins his slightly younger colleagues as “primus inter pares.” Smirnov, who has worked closely with interpretive masters such as Heinz Holliger, brings it all: a communicative approachability, a musical temperament, virtuoso technique, and an extraordinary sense of style honed through historical performance practice. In addition to works by Joseph Haydn and Steve Reich, George Enescu’s passionate string octet is on the program.
