He sang the blues of the Renaissance: "Semper Dowland, semper dolens" ("Always Dowland, always suffering") was John Dowland's personal motto. The lute virtuoso became the star of the golden age of Elizabethan music in England around 1600 alongside William Shakespeare. Samrat Majumder is now enjoying his beautiful and wonderfully melancholy works to the full on his modern concert guitar. The Scottish musician with Indian roots has won competitions all over Europe, partly because of his profound interpretations. He also puts them at the service of Bach's Suite in C minor, one of the few works that the composer, who actually subscribed to keyboard instruments, wrote for the lute.
