Signum Quartett
Schubert in Soweto

What happens when the composer "sometimes lets go of time so that it can flow unhindered"? Dieter Schnebel examined Schubert's late works in his essay "Auf der Suche nach der befreiten Zeit" ("In search of Liberated Time"). Listening to Schubert's music in response to this is a pleasure; for example in the Quartet Movement in C minor, which allows a lot of time to pass during the feverish search for musical ground underfoot, or in the symphonically long outer movements of the String Quartet in G major. In relation to the 30th anniversary of the end of apartheid in 2024, "Liberated Time" has a very personal meaning for South African Xandi van Dijk, violist with the Signum Quartet. To mark the occasion, the quartet commissioned works from South African composers - and is now traveling to Soweto with Schubert.
