Linear or Cyclical: "Heavenly Length" and the Perception of Time in the Present

Free admission!

A constant forward movement - but one that never reaches its destination: this is how Thomas Fuchs, Karl Jaspers Professor of Philosophical Foundations of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University of Heidelberg, describes the "linear" time that prevails in modern societies. According to Fuchs, the constant acceleration of all processes in linear time means that the periodic processes of "cyclical" time dictated by nature are being pushed further and further back. The consequences are excessive demands and exhaustion, even burnout. In "Zeit-Raum", a format in which speakers from the world of science encounter the festival motto "Liberated Time", the enthusiastic amateur pianist talks about the importance of music in regaining a human sense of time.
