Raw materials, products and ideas have been going back and forth between China and Europe for centuries. However fundamentally the transfer process may have changed, fascination and mutual distrust still balance each other out. The conceptual background of Toni Ming Geiger's Lied.LAB is the exhibition "Dust & Silk" shown at the museum, in which historical objects, artworks and photographs are confronted with contemporary perspectives on the Silk Road theme. Dealing with questions of identity and the conversation between cultures are the main concerns of his work, says pianist and song designer Toni Ming Geiger. Born in Munich in 1990 as the son of a Chinese and a German sinologist, he likes to operate in the intermediate zones of cultures and artistic disciplines. From 2018 to 2021, he was a scholarship recipient of the Heidelberger Frühling Liedakademie, and in parallel he participated in renowned scholarship programs such as the Carnegie Hall SongStudio. Today he teaches Lied and concert design at the Hochschule in Cologne. For his Heidelberg Lied.LAB, Geiger has teamed up with Latvian soprano Katrīna Paula Felsberga, an alumna of the last Liedakademie year, joined by other outstanding musicians whose instruments bring together Eastern and Western sound worlds.
