Wettbewerb "Das Lied" is discontinued

Due to the announced austerity measures and cuts in the city of Heidelberg's double budget, Heidelberger Frühling has been forced to give up the international "Das Lied" competition. This means that there is no reliable financial basis for its continuation.

"I very much regret the discontinuation of the "Das Lied" competition under the chairmanship of Thomas Quasthoff. It is regarded as one of the most important singing competitions and was an important springboard for many singers. The competition was also an important part of the Heidelberger Frühling Liedzentrum, which is particularly committed to the sustainable promotion of young talent for Lied artists. We are therefore doing everything we can to create further important platforms for young Lied performers in the future, in addition to our successful work at the Liedakademie under the artistic direction of Thomas Hampson."

Discovering the Lied talents of tomorrow

For many years, the international "Das Lied" competition has promoted outstanding Lied singers of the younger generation. In addition to prize money, concert engagements in renowned international halls were awarded.

The competition was founded in 2009 by Thomas Quasthoff and quickly developed into one of the most important singing competitions in the world. Since 2017, it has been organized by the Heidelberger Frühling Liedzentrum; previously it took place in Berlin. The last edition of the competition was held in 2023.

For audiences, organizers, festivals and agencies, the competition offered a unique opportunity to get to know the promising voices of tomorrow and to experience the art form of song in all its diversity.

The Heidelberger Frühling continues to be committed to the sustainable promotion of young song talents. In addition to the Liedakademie, new platforms for young Lied performers are to be created in the future.
