»The viola in my life« - the title of Morton Feldman's hypnotic piece from the American composer's eponymous group of works could also be written over the entire concert by Nils Mönkemeyer and his piano partner William Youn. The viola, shamefully neglected by most composers, has to fight for its status, since in chamber music it is often intended only as an alternative instrument, if at all. Thus it takes the lead here in Schumann's Opus 70 from the horn, in the late Brahms Sonata from the clarinet, and in the collaborative work of the »F.A.E Sonata« from the violin.
