"In a string quartet, real friendship comes through music," says Russian violinist Ilya Gringolts. The best example of this is his own multinational quartet: it celebrates its 15th anniversary this year – in the original line-up with his wife, the Armenian violinist Anahit Kurtikyan, the Romanian violist Silvia Simionescu and the German cellist Claudius Herrmann. The Gringolts Quartet's program also transcends national and musical boundaries, leading from two works of German Romanticism to the Swiss-Hungarian Sándor Veress and the first string quartet of the Ukrainian contemporary Valentin Silvestrov.
