Iveta Apkalna loves the Kuhn organs of Heidelberg's Jesuitenkirche – and that's why, two years after her celebrated concert with works by Bach and Philip Glass, the Latvian star organist is once again part of this year's Brahms focus. Clara Schumann was about to leave the world, and Brahms also sensed his approaching end when, in May 1896, he tackled his eleven chorale preludes for the organ, most of whose song models also have death and eternity as their themes. Musically, they combine, as is clear from the juxtaposition with pieces by Bach and Liszt, Baroque austerity with harmonically rich, Romantic expression.
