Searching the land of the Polish with the soul
At the 1919 Polish National Music Competition, Alexandre Tansman won all three prizes for composition in one fell swoop: cunningly, he had submitted several works under a pseudonym. Born in Łódź, the future friend and biographer of Igor Stravinsky spent most of his life in Paris. Celebrated in his day as a virtuoso pianist as well as a composer, Tansman is all but forgotten today. The three musicians of the Warsaw-based ensemble named after him juxtapose Tansman's string trios, marked by neoclassicism and folk music influences, with attractive works by three other Polish composers. With his impulsive trio of 1991, the one-time avant-gardist Krzysztof Penderecki asserts his special position in the recent musical history of his homeland.
