Six musicians from the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the Quatuor Ardeo form an ideal ensemble here for the two string sextets by the young Johannes Brahms. And not only because these rapturous works were significantly influenced by two of the composer's girlfriends, Clara Schumann and Agathe von Siebold. In addition, the music is played on historical instruments of the Brahms era with gut strings, which lends a special intensity and warmth to the song-like works, which are situated between chamber music and symphonic music.
